GroupNI.com provides webspace for all manner of groups in Northern Ireland. Groups get their own subdomain, email address, webspace and a website content management system. A subdomain is a web address that contains the host domain name. For example this website has the address "GroupNI.com" (you can ignore the www bit as it dosen't really count). If a motor racing club was called, say, "the Pole Position Motor Racing Club" then they could have a subdomain with the address "PolePosition.GroupNI.com". Their website address would then be "PolePosition.GroupNI.com". Email addresses are straightforward. the email address associated with the example above would be PolePosition@GroupNI.com. The webspace for each group is from a shared pool of space which is 3Gb is size. At the moment this is less than 10% utilised but as it fills up the overall size of the pool will be increased. Most group websites will probably be around 10 to 20 Mb (there are 1000 Mb in a Gb). The website Content Management System (CMS) is what enables the group to control their own website. A CMS allows a website to be created and maintained with little or no knowledge of website design, computer programming, html coding or other technical experience. We use the Mambo CMS as this is a very flexible and easy to use system. There are numerous templates and tutorials on the internet for Mambo (although tutorials aren't really needed). The two example sites (Example 1, Example 2) were each created in about 1 day without any prior experience of Mambo. |
